For the last day of her two weeks of leading morning singing at 69传媒’s Summer Festival Lynn Featherstone invited pianist Stan Cyprus for a live-music karaoke in which students sing popular songs along with Stan’s piano accompaniment. In years past, Stan used to teach the orchestra class at Toronto Waldorf School.

Lynn explained that they do this on occasion with the high school so that the students learn that the pop music they like to listen to is also music. Thanks to Lynn and Stan for their enthusiasm and musicianship. It was fun!

And yes, there’s still time to register for week three of the Summer Festival: /summerfestival/

Recent 69传媒 early childhood part-time program graduate Maria Hernandez did her project on the days of the week and their connections, resonances and correspondences. For example, each day of the week corresponds to one of the classical planets (including the sun but excluding Pluto, Uranus and Neptune).

Also each day (or planet) connects with a particular archangel, a certain colour, a musical tone, a metal, a species of tree, a variety of grain, an organ in the human body, a particular vowel sound, and a seven-year period of human life. The figure drawings at the bottom of each panel represent the eurythmy gesture for the vowel sound.

These correspondences are not taught to young children but some of them may be used by the teacher in helping subtly support the quality of each day and the rhythm of the week in the Waldorf early childhood experience.

When Maria graduated from the program in March she was working as an assistant in the kindergarten at the Sunrise School of Miami. But this coming autumn she has been asked to take the first grade class. So now, as of July 8th 2024, she is at the 69传媒 Summer Festival getting ready to take on that new challenge.

These are what she came up with for her project:

Morning singing at the Summer Festival 2023 with Clara Hilts

Each day at the Summer Festival starts with singing. This year, in weeks one and two, morning singing will be led by Lynn Featherstone, who teaches music at Toronto Waldorf School. At the Summer Festival Lynn will also be teaching afternoon music for grades teachers in week two.

Here鈥檚 Lynn鈥檚 bio from the Summer Festival brochure: Lynn was raised in Cambridge, Ontario where she started piano lessons at age 6, beginning a life-long journey through music 鈥 as a choral singer, soloist and conductor. At the University of Toronto she completed both her bachelor of music in music education in voice studies and a masters degree in music education. Lynn is an alto with the Elmer Iseler Singers, a JUNO-award-winning professional choral ensemble that performs across North America, and is also mezzo soloist/assistant conductor for the early music ensemble, Toronto Chamber Choir.

Mt. Lefroy, by Lauren Harris, of the Group of Seven

In search of a Canadian identity in art and driven by a common spiritual yearning, several painters came together in 1920 as The Group of Seven. No discussion of these wonderful artists would be complete without an investigation of Theosophy, the mystical painters of Scandinavia and Russia, Wassily Kandinsky鈥檚聽Concerning the Spiritual in Art, and the Group鈥檚 great Canadian contemporaries Emily Carr and Tom Thomson. Sacred geometry will be included as an artistic activity.

Julian Mulock

Born in England of Canadian parents, Julian Mulock spent his formative years in Waldorf schools in England before moving to Canada. He graduated with honours from the three-year Special Art Course at Central Technical School, Toronto and in 1972 joined the staff of the Royal Ontario Museum as a scientific illustrator before embarking on an independent career as a freelance illustrator, muralist and painter.
